FORMULA:
Each Aksef 250 Film Tablet contains cefuroxime axetil as active ingredient, which is equal to 250 mg cefuroxime and as coloring agent titanium dioxide.

PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES:
Cefuroxime has bactericidal activity against a wide range of common pathogens, including many beta-lactamase producing strains. Cefuroxime is stable to many bacterial beta-lactamases as a result of this it is active against most of the strains resistant to ampicillin and amoxicillin. Bioavailability is greater when the tablets taken after food. No dosage adjustment necessary based on geriatric patients.

INDICATIONS: Aksef 250 Film Tablet is indicated for the treatment of following infections caused by sensitive bacteria.

  • Lower respiratory tract infections: acute bronchitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis and pneumonia.
  • Upper respiratory tract infections: ear-nose-throat infections, such as otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis and pharyngitis.
  • Genito-urinary tract infections: pyelonephritis, cystitis and urethritis.
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: fronculosis, pyoderma and impetigo.
  • Gonorrhoea: acute uncomplicated gonococcal urethritis, and cervicitis.
  • Lyme disease.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Cefuroxime axetil products are contraindicated in patients with known allergy to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics.

DRUG INTERACTIONS and OTHER INTERACTIONS:
Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may result in a lower bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil.

SIDE EFFECTS / ADVERSE EVENTS:
Rarely diarrhoea, nausea/vomiting, muscle cramps, hypersensitivity reactions and very rarely anaphylaxis have been reported.

WARNINGS / PRECAUTIONS:
Cephalosporin antibiotics should be given with caution to patients who are known hypersensitive to penicillin’s.
Cefuroxime did not interfere with psychomotor performance.
Pregnancy Category B. There is no experimental evidence of embryopathic or teratogenic effects attributable to cefuroxime axetil but, as with all drugs, it should be administered with caution during early months of pregnancy.
Cefuroxime is excreted in human milk, and consequently caution should be exercised when cefuroxime axetil is administered to nursing mother.

DOSAGE and ADMINISTRATION:
Recommended dosage for adults and children older than 12 years of age is 250 mg twice a day. For more severe infections or infections caused by less susceptible organisms 500 mg twice a day should be given.
Recommended dosage for uncomplicated gonorrhoea is 1000 mg as a single dose.

HOW SUPPLIED:
Aksef 250 mg Film Tablets: In blister packs of 10 and 20 tablets.
